Room 2 goes Skiing!

We had our annual whole school ski trip to Roundhill on Tuesday 29 July. It was a fantastic, sunny day enjoyed by all our kids, their parents and the teachers.

All of our kids had ski/snowboard lessons at the start of the day. Most of the kids picked up skiing really well and were soon zooming down the Learners Platter.

Miss Walker bought Doug up for the day and he really enjoyed playing in the snow too.

Thank you to all our wonderful parents for your help and for taking photos!

Below is a photo of Molly and Jamie on the Learners Platter.

Ronald McDonald visits Room 2

On Wednesday 18 June, Ronald McDonald came to Cannington School and put on a show about Road Safety for the children in Room 2.

We learnt about:
  • Walking safely on the 'house side' of the footpath
  • Crossing a driveway
  • The Kerb Drill - Stop, Look and Listen
  • Wearing a seat belt

Ronald McDonald had a big book with a story about his stripy sock that went missing from the washing line. He decides to search for his missing sock and along the way, he has to use lots of road safety rules. Miss Walker had to read the story out loud while Ronald acted it out. Finally, we found his sock... on his back!

PictureIsla and Molly before their race.
On Friday 30 May we held the Rural School's Cross Country here at Cannington School.

Children from Cannington, Beaconsfield, Barton Rural, Timaru Christian, St Josephs Pleasant Point and St Andrews schools compete in the Cross Country, as we are all part of the Rural School's Cluster.

Our wonderful Friends of Cannington School put on a BBQ selling drinks, chocolate, sausages and burgers to keep all the competitors, spectators and teachers happy.

It was a fantastic day, the weather was perfect (the sun was shining!) and we are super proud of all our Cannington kids for taking part and doing their best.

Mac Holmwood finished 4th in the Year 5/6, so he qualifies to represent the Rural School's cluster at South Canterbury Cross Country, held at Waihi School. Ryan Paul finished 7th and Bradley Murray finished 11th. Well done boys!

Kaitlyn Murray ran well, finishing 5th in the Year 3/4 race and Molly Smith proved she was a speedster by finishing first in the Year 1/2 race. Great effort girls!

Check out our Gallery for more Cross Country pics.

On Monday 19 May, Miss Walker travelled to Dunedin with the Year 6, 7 & 8 students for the National Young Leaders Day (NYLD).The objectives of NYLD are: empowerment, positivity, inspiration, connection, motivation and education. There were six speakers:  Cam Calkoen, Brad Thorn, Nakita Turner, Tamsin Cooper, Emily Mabin Sutton & Christian Gallen.

The theme of this year’s NYLD was ‘3D’ which stood for ‘Dream, Dare, Develop.’ All of the speakers were highly inspirational and motivational and had a good message for everyone.

It was a fantastic day had by all and the children got a lot out of it.

For photos of the kids in Dunedin, check out our gallery.

Happy Mother's Day to all our wonderful mum's.
Here is Room 2 with their Mother's Day gifts.
We used twigs from around the school and garden twine to create these rustic frames. We put a story about our mum's in the frame.
Our mum's loved them!

Back into it!

Our topic this term is called 'Intelligent Inventors' and we are going to be learning about Sir Bill Hamilton, John Britten, Richard Pearse and AJ Hackett. We are going to take a trip to see Richard Pearse's plane and also hopefully go on a jet boat ride!

We have Rural School's cross country in Week 4 and our annual ski trip to Roundhill in the last week of term.

It is only a 9 week term so it will fly by! Lots to do! Keep checking back for updates.

The Rocky Shore

Last Friday, we went on a trip to town. We went to CBay to watch some of the Rural Schools Swimming Sports and then we went down to the Rocky Shore. Most of us hadn't been there before, so it was really exciting. We saw lots of crabs, mussels, starfish and sea shells.

On Monday, we wrote a descriptive recount about our trip to the Rocky Shore. Miss Walker published it for us and then we illustrated it. We think it looks pretty awesome!

We have been busy creating self portraits!
We had to draw an outline with pencil first and then we used pastels to colour them in. We had to think about where our eyes, nose, mouth, ears and eyebrows should go! Miss Walker thinks we did a pretty awesome job.
